Most sports injuries are due to misalignment of the spine. When your spine is not properly aligned, this causes tension in your body, which causes wear and tear. Also, if athletes are not warming up and stretching their body before a game or a race, they’re setting themselves up for failure. Stretching helps increase your flexibility and your range of motion, which helps prevent injuries. Athletes should be careful not to overdo it though, as over-stretching can be just as detrimental as not stretching at all.
Another way to avoid injuries is do not ignore any pain. Some people think that if they ignore the pain and finish playing that they are being a helpful part of the team. But playing in pain isn’t helping your team or yourself. Your body is trying to tell you something and you should never ignore it. Even a small amount of pain can turn into a big problem if you choose to ignore it. What started off as something small could quickly grow into a serious injury, which could cause you to miss the rest of the season.
Sports Injuries: Benefits of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care is so beneficial to athletes that every NFL team has a chiropractor team. During a game or a run, athletes are putting their body’s through a lot. We’ll use hockey as an example. First, look at all of the arm and leg muscles they’re using to get to the puck, get around people, hitting the puck, etc. But then, they are constantly slamming into each other, which looks pretty painful to me. After putting their body’s through so much pain and strain, a chiropractic treatment is a good way to alleviate the pain.
Other benefits are:
- Improved performance
- More effective training
- Fewer Injuries
- Reduced recovery times
An ACL tear is a tear of your ligament that can be caused by suddenly stopping, jumping, or suddenly changing direction. You may hear a “pop” sound if you’ve torn your ACL, followed by extreme pain.
How beneficial chiropractic care is for an ACL tear depends on the severity of the injury. While chiropractic care can’t magically heal your torn ACL, a chiropractor can help with the healing process. If you have just overstretched your ligament and you receive a knee joint adjustment, it will help to restore the motion and function of your knee. Chiropractic treatment will also help reduce the inflammation from your ACL tear.
If you have a hamstring strain, it may feel as though there is a tightness in the back of your knee that causes you to have to stop to rest or to slow down. A common factor in hamstring injuries is your posture. Bad posture can cause a misalignment in your spine known as anterior pelvic tilt. This tilt causes your hamstrings to constantly be stretched, which contributes to easy injuries.
If you have severely injured your hamstring, people have been known to hear a “POP” and they immediately fall to the ground. It is important that if you have a hamstring injury to rest it.
You will then want to receive chiropractic treatments to regain your range of motion. Chiropractors will also use soft tissue techniques that can help with scar tissue, while helping the hamstring heal. Once the athlete regains range of motion, they can begin using light weights and specific stretches to regain strength.
Tennis elbow is the overuse of the tendons in your forearm. If you are experiencing tennis elbow, you will have pain on the outer part of your elbow that will gradually get worse. The pain experienced is from swelling of your tendons, usually from overuse.
Chiropractors can help you with stretching during a tennis elbow injury. They will give you important exercises to help you, such as wrist exercises, wrist extension, grip strengthening exercises, and strengthening. These treatments will help increase your range of motion and flexibility. You should avoid doing anything strenuous that will further injure the tendons.
It’s easy when doing any physical activity to possibly twist your foot the wrong way or to fall on your ankle the wrong way. When this happens, your ligaments that hold your ankle bones and joints together become stretched or even can be torn. After a stretch or a tear of your ankle, you’ll notice pain when placing weight on your foot immediately.
Using chiropractic treatment for an ankle sprain can be very beneficial in helping to heal the sprain. Many people don’t know this, because they associate chiropractors with the spine, but chiropractors can also adjust your ankles. Treatment cannot begin if the ankle sprain is fresh. Once the athlete has rested and elevated the sprain, along with ice treatments, treatment can begin. The main focus of the treatment of an ankle sprain is to speed up the healing of the strain and to reduce the chances of another injury.
Chiropractic care can help, in some way, with any sport injury. Chiropractic care cannot be your only source of recovery though. After suffering a sports injury, you should get the appropriate testing to verify the exact problem so it can be treated correctly. To help avoid sports injuries, athletes should use chiropractic treatment to help with their flexibility and with their range of motion. Chiropractic treatment will also help athletes achieve a shorter healing time so they can return as quickly as possible to doing what they love to do.
